Deck the Halls…but first let’s talk

Ah, the holidays—a magical time when twinkling lights, glittering menorahs, and seasonal décor collide in a spirited tug-of-war for your living room. As an interior designer, I promote keeping your home a sanctuary of style, even when it’s brimming with glitter and, tinsel, and, yes, a little too much red/green or blue/silver sparkle. So let’s talk about how to keep it all classy (San Diego).

Lights: Twinkle Thoughtfully

Lights are a universal holiday joy—whether you’re stringing up fairy lights or kindling the menorah. Subtlety is a skill, friends, and holiday lights are no exception. If your house can be seen from space, it’s time to reevaluate. Stick to warm white lights or, if you’re feeling bold, one accent color. Remember: your goal is "elegant glow," not "Vegas strip."

Holiday Decorating: Know When to Stop

There’s a fine line between festive and “my house is a theme park.” You don’t need to use every ornament in the box. Edit ruthlessly. Remember: less is more… unless it’s champagne. Opt for sophisticated touches like ceramic menorahs, velvet blue throw pillows, or minimalist star motifs. Similarly, Christmas fans should embrace subtle elegance. If your sofa is buried under 14 "Let It Snow" pillows, we have a problem.

Family Houseguests: A Survival Guide

Think of the guest room as a hotel suite, minus the minibar. A few thoughtful touches can make guests feel welcome while minimizing their need to “borrow” your toothbrush.

  • Bedding: Fresh sheets, extra blankets, and a variety of pillows (firm and soft) ensure comfort.

  • Extras: Leave a basket with towels, toiletries, and maybe a sleep mask—because Uncle Bob will snore.

  • Tech Station: A charging station or power strip eliminates the need for guests to unplug your lamps searching for an outlet.

  • Clear the Closet: No one wants to live out of a suitcase. Offer closet space or hooks for coats and clothes.

Pro Tip: Add a festive touch like a sprig of holly or greenery on the nightstand in a pretty vase. it’s all about the details.

Even under the best of circumstances, family dynamics can throw a wrench in things quickly. Houseguests sometimes bring their own rules—early risers turning on lights, kids reorganizing your throw pillows, or relatives attempting to “fix” your coffee maker. Setting boundaries upfront can keep things running smoothly. When you’ve had enough, don’t hesitate to retreat to a cozy reading nook or outdoor seating area ready for when you—or your guests—need a breather.

Tablescapes That Don’t Overwhelm

Whether you're hosting a Christmas feast, a Hanukkah dinner, or a festive gathering that blends traditions, your table is the star of the show. A thoughtfully designed tablescape can set the tone for a magical evening while wowing your guests with its understated elegance. Let’s create a holiday tablescape that’s more “effortlessly chic” and less “Pinterest gone wrong.”

Sophisticated Tablescape Formula:

  1. Base: A neutral tablecloth + a runner or placemats.

  2. Centerpiece: Candles + florals or natural elements.

  3. Dinnerware: Chargers + clean, elegant plates.

  4. Glassware: Fancy but functional.

  5. Accents: Personal touches, subtle sparkle.

Remember, the season is about joy, not perfection. If all else fails, just dim the lights, pour some mulled wine, and enjoy the fact that January is only a few weeks away.

Cheers to surviving—and thriving—this holiday season!
