Transforming Your Outdoor Space: Tips from an Interior Designer

It’s the middle of summer but there’s still time to uplevel your outdoor living spaces. In fact, now is a great time to do it. You’ve been paying more attention to these spaces recently so it is fresh in your mind how you are using them and what works/doesn’t work. You also have the opportunity to add features that will take you into the colder months and extend the time you use these spaces.

As an interior designer, I've always believed that the design of your home doesn't stop at the front door. The outdoor spaces surrounding your home are an extension of your interior, offering a seamless blend of comfort, style, and functionality. Here are a few mid summer tips for making impactful changes:

1. Define Your Space with Purposeful Zoning

Just as you would with an open-plan interior, consider zoning your outdoor space to serve different functions. Whether you have a sprawling garden or a compact balcony, defining specific areas can make your outdoor space more functional and enjoyable.

  • Dining Area: Create a dedicated spot for alfresco dining with a sturdy table, comfortable chairs, and a shade structure like a pergola or umbrella.

  • Lounge Zone: Set up a cozy seating area with outdoor sofas, armchairs, and side tables. Add an outdoor rug and some throw pillows for extra comfort.

  • Play Area: If you have children, designate a safe and fun play area with kid-friendly furniture, a sandbox, or a small playhouse.

  • Garden Nook: For those who love gardening, create a small garden nook with raised beds, potted plants, and a potting bench.

  • Quiet Space: A bench added to a slightly removed area of the property can be a peaceful refuge when some quiet time is needed. Adults and kids alike need time outs!

2. Choose Weather-Resistant Furniture

Outdoor furniture must withstand the elements, so opt for pieces made from durable, weather-resistant materials. Look for furniture made from teak, aluminum, or synthetic rattan, which are not only stylish but also designed to endure various weather conditions.

Don't forget to invest in high-quality cushions with removable, washable covers made from water-resistant fabrics. This is an area to avoid skimping. The more expensive pieces are better quality and will last longer.

3. Create Shade and Shelter

Providing shade and shelter can make your outdoor space more comfortable and usable, especially during hot summer days or unexpected rain showers.

  • Pergolas and Gazebos: These structures provide shade and can be adorned with climbing plants for added beauty.

  • Retractable Awnings: A retractable awning offers flexibility, allowing you to enjoy the sun or shade as needed.

  • Outdoor Curtains: Add a touch of elegance and privacy with outdoor curtains that can be drawn to block the sun or wind.

4. Add Ambiance with Lighting

Outdoor lighting is crucial for setting the mood and extending the usability of your space into the evening. Consider a mix of lighting options to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

  • String Lights: Hang string lights across your patio or along a fence to add a whimsical, festive touch.

  • Pathway Lights: Install solar-powered pathway lights to illuminate walkways and garden paths.

  • Lanterns and Candles: Place lanterns and candles on tables and around seating areas for a cozy, intimate glow.

5. Embrace Multi-Season Design

To make the most of your outdoor space year-round, consider elements that can be enjoyed in different seasons.

We used this Firepit from Boxhill on the project shown above. It’s concrete finish adds an element of texture and warmth to the modern design.

  • Fire Pits: A fire pit provides warmth and a gathering spot during cooler months. Choose one like the one shown here that houses propane tanks inside it.

  • Outdoor Heaters: Patio heaters can extend the usability of your outdoor space into late fall and early spring.

  • All-Weather Furniture Covers: Protect your furniture with covers designed to withstand all seasons, ensuring longevity and durability.

6. Hire a Designer

If you have a large outdoor area and budget permits, I highly recommend hiring a designer who can look at the big picture, assess your lifestyle and preferences and come up with a cohesive plan for how best to utilize your space. Interior Designers are actually well equipped for designing outdoor spaces as they approach these areas similarly to other areas of the home. Outside experts like plant specialists etc. can be brought into the mix when needed.

Enhancing your outdoor space is an exciting opportunity to expand your living area and create a personal oasis. Whether you're looking to entertain guests, spend quality time with family, or simply relax in nature, a well-designed outdoor space can provide the perfect setting.
